Education Maintenance Allowance

According to research from the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), young people today are
as concerned about money worries as they are about exam results.

Zest for Life Fundraiser

Zest for Life, the Charitable Trust which oversees the sponsorship of orphans at Miriu
School in Kenya, is organising a fundraiser in April: Family Barn Dance and Supper
featuring Jigsmith at Tilstock Bradbury Village Hall.

The Home Access Scheme

Home Access is a government initiative to help low-income families to get access to a
computer and the internet in order to be able to get online at home.

Free School Meals

From the start of the Autumn term, the value of a free meal is £1.95 per day.

Fundraising

Our ‘Be a Hero for Haiti’ campaign in the week leading up to half-term was very successful and raised just over £1600: a  magnificent achievement.

Tracksuit Jackets for Sale

The School has a limited stock of tracksuit jackets available at the reduced price of £10. Please contact Student Reception at  Lowe Hill on 01939 237000.

New Texting Service to Parents – Do we have your mobile ‘phone number?

As you are probably aware, the School is trialling a new texting service whereby we are able to contact parents via their mobile  phones. This is already proving its worth as an ideal way of informing parents of parents evening reminders, exam dates, sports fixtures, etc.

YFC Junior Speaking Competition

Alice Lloyd-Brown and Beverley Lockier (both Year 10), who are members of Wem Young Farmers Club, were in a team of three girls who came 2nd in the “YFC Junior Speaking Competition” held in December.

Wem Town Hall

The Town Hall will be showing four films as part of the Borderlines Film Festival, 26 February – 13 March.

Hockey

The School is also proud to have currently one of the strongest under 16 girls’ hockey teams in the Midlands.

Badminton

Both our boys’ and girls’ teams won the North Shropshire U14 championships with the girls going on to win the all-Shropshire
championships.

Cross-country

The School has also enjoyed success at cross-country. Towards the end of January the School took a strong squad of runners to the Shropshire Schools’ Cross-Country Championships.

Swimming

Our swimmers also gave a very good account of themselves at the swimming gala held at Thomas Telford School.

The Safer School Initiative

The “Safer School Initiative” is primarily a school security initiative that encompasses personal safety. It was created by West Mercia Police with the support of the Shropshire Council Children and Young People’s Services Directorate.

School Uniform

All students should be wearing the School polo shirt with the School sweatshirt on top when the weather warrants it; students cannot just wear the sweatshirt without the polo shirt.

Emergency closure procedure

Whenever possible we try to keep school open, but should we be informed that road conditions are dangerous and buses are
unable to run, a decision will be taken to close school before 7.00am.

Free Internet Safety Awareness Talk

FREE session offering advice, practical tips and what to be aware of when your children go online.

Communication with the School

The School has an answering machine for out-of-office hours and this is checked first thing every morning. Any messages you leave will receive as prompt attention as possible both during term time and holiday time.
