Subject Outline
There is a very strong tradition of Religious Education at Thomas Adams School, and the
last ten years in particular have witnessed a steady rise in the popularity of the subject
here.
The department has consistently tried to be at the forefront of innovation - responding
positively to national and county initiatives. Thomas Adams School staff had a key role in
the establishing of the Shropshire RE Agreed Syllabus.
The department has moved with the times, selecting syllabi which are stimulating and
relevant for pupils living in today's multi-faith society. In Years 7-9, the department
complies closely with the Shropshire Agreed Syllabus. In Year 7, pupils are taught in mixed
ability form classes. In Years 8 and 9 they are taught in setted groups. At GCSE, pupils
study Religion and Life + Religion and Society - Contemporary Moral Issues from
Christian, Jewish and Islamic perspectives (Ed Excel). AS and A2 level follows OCR's
Developments in Christian Thought (Liberation, Feminist and Black Theologies) and Ethics
papers.
Pupils' perceptions of the subject are overwhelmingly positive. External examination
results bear this out - GCSE and A-level grades are consistently good.
Usually, there are six GCSE groups at any one time within Key Stage 4. In recent years, Alevel
numbers have been over 20. It is not unheard of for Adams College A-level Religious
Education numbers to exceed those from the rest of the county added together! Clearly
then, we can state with confidence that the experience of Religious Education offered in
The Thomas Adams School, Wem is lively, stimulating and accessible to everyone.
Best of all - it's enjoyed by staff and pupils alike!
