Subject Outline
Physical Education at Thomas Adams is concerned with good healthy lifestyles and
physical fitness, and the participation in a range of physical activities designed to satisfy
the needs, abilities and interests of individual pupils. We firmly believe that a positive
attitude to health and exercise will lead to the strong physical development of our pupils,
and a long, healthy life. Throughout our programme we are trying to make pupils healthier
and happier.
At Thomas Adams we have the benefit of fine facilities, thus giving the pupils maximum
benefit and resources for enjoyable, vigorous, purposeful and regular exercise. There is a
joint-use Sports Centre, tennis courts and a very large area of sports fields. We also make
full use of the swimming pool located next to the School.
The range of physical activities is wide and includes:
Athletics : Swimming : Games : Dance : Gymnastics : Badminton
Basketball : Volleyball : Hockey : Netball : Football : Cricket
Tennis : Rounders
Within the broad philosophy that taking part is more important than winning, individual
talents and sporting aptitudes are greatly encouraged. We strongly encourage social and
personal qualities such as the acceptance of responsibility, loyalty and co-operation,
determination, tolerance and the pleasure of success.
Adams pupils have achieved success and honours at Area, County and National level, and
our teams have regularly won County titles.
Physical Education enhances physical skills such as body management, co-ordination ,
personal and social skills such as co-operation, self-discipline, leadership and many other
learning skills, eg. listening, problem solving, decision making.
In Year 7 the subject is taught initially in mixed-ability groups. From the middle of Year 7
onwards, groupings are organised increasingly with individual interests and strengths
taken into consideration.
GCSE and A Level Physical Education are popular subjects with their mixed blend of theory
and practice.
The broad and balanced Extra-Curricular programme is a particular strength at Thomas
Adams. It offers the chance for all children to experience a range of activities in greater
depth. For some students it is a chance to gain extra confidence in an activity they may
have found challenging. For others it is a chance to gain an extra competitive challenge in
activities they are already proficient in. In both cases the overall aim is that students have
fun whilst participating in Physical Education.
