Subject Outline
The aim of the Music department is to generate a genuine lifelong love of music in all
pupils through the main musical activities of listening, performing and composing.
In Years 7, 8 and 9 every student has a double period of music each week and the subject
is then offered at both GCSE and 'A' level, as well as Music Technology.
Aural awareness and the practical skills necessary for communication through music are of
central importance and are developed at each Key Stage. Throughout all years the aim is
to offer pupils a broad experience of different musical styles, different periods and
different cultural traditions, as well as looking at the function of music within society. The
emphasis is on practical work and pupils are strongly encouraged to use their experience
gained at Key Stage 1 and 2, along with any expertise gained from instrumental lessons or
in other musical activities in or outside school.
Pupils are encouraged to develop awareness of national, local and world music events.
Visits are arranged and workshops organised, for example GCSE music students work with
singer songwriters and have had workshops from Cuban musicians, AS music students
have been involved in composition projects leading to professional performance and
recording of their compositions. All students are encouraged to use and develop their ICT
skills in music to realize their creative ideas.
MUSICAL ACTIVITIES
There are many weekly musical activities open to pupils: Girls' Choir, Mixed Choir, String
Orchestra, Orchestra, Wind Band, Big Band, Sax Ensemble and Clarinet Choir. There are
also a number of rock bands at Thomas Adams. As well as these groups there are
frequent opportunities for chamber music. There are regular performances throughout the
year in which pupils, parents and staff take part both in and outside of school. Some are
large-scale concerts but there are other events such as recital evenings. There is also a
school show each year in which many pupils get involved as singers and performers. Recent productions include “Fiddler” : “Les Misérables” : “West Side Story” : “Oliver”.
Music plays a vitally important part in the life of Thomas Adams School and we are proud
of the quality and range of musical experiences that are on offer to pupils. We are gaining
a national reputation in music with invitations to perform at the Sidmouth and Towersay
International Folk Festivals this year.
INSTRUMENTAL TUITION
Many pupils opt to have instrumental lessons at Thomas Adams. These lessons are
provided by the Shropshire Music Service and are subsidised by the School. The range of
instruments on offer includes the full range of String, Woodwind and Brass instruments as
well as Voice, Guitar and Percussion. Piano and Keyboard lessons have been offered from
September 2002, with great interest from many students.
Modest fees are payable and the County can provide assistance with fees if necessary.
Pupils who take this opportunity to learn an instrument are expected to take part in at
least one of the weekly musical groups. Lessons are available at the discretion of the
School, in conjunction with the Shropshire Music Service.
