Subject Outline
The School was delighted to learn in September 2002 that it had gained Arts College
status, specialising in the Media Arts. The additional government funding, which comes
with achieving this status, has enabled the School to build a brand new Media Arts Centre
on its Lowe Hill site with the very best facilities and equipment.
The School is now very excited about the impact that the Media Arts can have on the
curriculum opportunities offered to our students.
Media Arts and the 2005-2006 School Curriculum
Year Seven students have the chance to acquire a wide range of Media Technology
skills via ICT, Drama, Music and Art, supported by one off activities which integrate
these new skills in co-ordinated projects.
-
In Years Ten and Eleven we offer for GCSE Media Arts delivered as either a
mainstream Media Studies course or with a Media Technology emphasis. There is
also a GNVQ in Media Studies.
-
In Years Twelve and Thirteen extra Media studies A Level groups have been
timetabled to supplement our existing provision of Media Studies and Film Studies A
level courses.
-
The English curriculum has benefited enormously from a greater element, and more
skilled use, of the Media Arts, especially as part of our Key Stage Three Strategy
and Literacy Policy but also at GCSE and A level.
-
The role of the Media in society is examined in the Lifestyle course and also in the
Sixth Form Extension Studies course.
-
Media Arts has been integrated into our existing provision for the Visual and
Performing Arts and also Design and Technology graphics and textiles.
-
All subjects across the curriculum and age range benefit from having schemes of
work and teaching and learning styles enhanced by Media Arts techniques and
concepts - the outcome should be raised standards.
-
Media Arts is increasing the quantity and quality of our extra curricular provision.
