Subject Outline
The Art department at Thomas Adams emphasises a command of basic skills in
drawing and modelling, thematically linked through a series of projects. Practical
work, developed through awareness and observation of the natural and man-made
environment, stimulates imaginative creative work which can be achieved in a
wide variety of media. Apart from
the usual drawing materials of pencil, pastel, ink and paint, students may work
in various print techniques, collage, batik, creative embroidery, card-construction,
papier-mâché and clay.
Investigation and research are encouraged through a knowledge of the work of
artists and designers, both past and present, improving the students' own work.
This facilitates critical judgement based on understanding, the opportunity
to discuss and compare and to develop personal direction and ideas.
Pride in achievement is promoted by the display of students' work, culminating
in an exhibition of all GCSE work which is open to the public.
In Years 7, 8 and 9 every student has a double period of Art each week and the
subject is then offered at both GCSE and 'A' level, with both enjoying an excellent
take-up and results.
